Understanding the environmental grade
A separate view of environmental evidence, imported with its data gaps and limitations intact.
What the grade represents
The environmental grade is the Green-Score calculated by Open Food Facts and imported by Kouka. It summarizes environmental evidence on a scale from A+ through F. Kouka does not invent or calculate its own environmental grade.
The evidence behind it
The upstream method combines a product-category lifecycle baseline with product-specific evidence such as production labels, ingredient origins, packaging, and threatened-species signals. This is separate from both nutrition and processing level.
Why information may be missing
A grade may be unavailable when categories, labels, origins, packaging, or other supporting data are incomplete. Kouka displays those missing data reasons rather than substituting a local estimate.
How contributions help
Community members can contribute packaging details, environmental labels, and ingredient-origin evidence. Those facts are moderated and improve the product record, but users cannot directly enter or assign a Green-Score.
Green-Score is experimental outside France and can evolve as upstream data and methodology improve.
